Winter Speed Work.

If during the winter you have backed off your speed sessions and are putting in lots of winter miles its a great idea to do some regular speed work. For example you could maintain speed from the summer by regularly doing 20 x 400 metres for a good 5 mile speed session, (or a speed session relevant to the athlete). Do these with 1 or 2 minutes recovery inbetween.

Why? Because if you suddenly start speed work again in the spring it is very easy to pick up an injury after the body has been deconditioned to it during the winter. This is a mistake many runners make and its well worth remembering.
